For Tsaatan people, the reindeer herders of the Mongolian taiga, social distancing is the norm. They spend most of their time living isolated in the snow forest, having social interactions merely with the members of their family

Picture from Glacier National Park

Glacier National Park is one of the places where you can most clearly observe the effects of climate change. Of the 150 glaciers that existed in the park in the late 19th century, only 26 remain today. If the current temperature trends continue they could be all gone in a few decades.

Picture from Rock Islands

I’m not having much luck with the weather in Palau. It seems that rainy season arrived sooner than expected. So I had to snorkel in uncomfortable situations, but it was still worth it because I could see more corals, like these ones that are really close to the water surface, especially at low tide.

Picture from Motiti Island

You can’t just walk onto a marae, you need to be welcomed on by one of its members. Plus every marae has its own kawa (protocols) and tikanga (rules). Usually at the conclusion of the welcoming you should hariru (shake hands) and hongi (press noses). The welcoming I received on Motiti island was even more intense than the one in Rotorua. I think this had to do also with the scenery and the atmosphere of the island.

During our stay in Moroma we were given as an accommodation one of the rooms of the local Health Center, that is probably the most modern construction in the village.

Photo from Shengsi Islands

It wasn’t easy, but I’ve finally reached the abandoned village of Houtouwan on Shengshan island. I will tell you more about this place in the following days.
