Picture from Danum Valley Conservation Area

Ok, it seems that it wasn’t a sunny day after all. In the middle of the trail my guide and me were surprised by a pretty intense storm and had to head back to the dorm. Couldn’t get out for the afternoon walk neither. Still, I can’t get enough of the misty horizon typical of the rainforest.

The nocturnal Wester Tarsier found in Borneo is vulnerable to extinction. It is a conservation dependent species meaning that they need to have more and improved management of protected habitats or they will definitely become extinct in the future.

As in many tropical areas around the planet, Borneo’s rainforests are being cut and degraded for wood, palm oil, pulp, rubber and minerals. The increase in these activities is being coupled with a growth in illegal wildlife trade, as cleared forests are easier to access and explore. #borneo #ephemera #sabah #malaysia #documentary #landscapephotography

Right now I’m Danum Valley rainforest. This conservation area has an extensive diversity of tropical flora and fauna, including Bornean orangutans, gibbons, mousedeer, clouded leopards and over 270 kinds of birds. It is one of the rare places where you can still find these species in the wild. #borneo #ephemera #danumvalley #landscapephotography #malaysia #documentary

Another endangered specie endemic to Borneo is the proboscis monkey, an arboreal ape with an unusually large nose. As most of the wild animals on the island, this funny and friendly fellow is seeing its natural habitat replaced by palm oil plantation.

My first stop in Borneo is Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Center, where orphaned orangutans are trained to survive again in the wild after losing their mother, mostly because of deforestation. These really intelligent apes are currently only found in the rainforests of Borneo and Sumatra and are one of the most endangered species on our planet. #borneo #ephemera #malaysia #orangutan #endangeredspecies

Goodbye China, hello Borneo! Last night I didn’t get any sleep to catch an early flight from Shanghai. But the view I got from the airplane window while landing on the island was definitely worth it. #ephemera #documentary #airplane #traveling #backstage

A day off at the hotel before leaving China and heading to Borneo. At the end of every expedition I take the time to review pictures and footage, clean the gear and take care of the project management.

In Shengshan the men that don’t go out fishing take care of the maintenance and repairing of the boats. #shengsi #ephemera #china #documentary #portraitphotography
