The wealth of the former residents of Houtouwan is still visible in the shape of the houses they’ve abandoned. Most of them are two-stories buildings, with nicely decorated walls and terraces.
Today nature is gradually taking over them. Unfortunately I came to soon to witness ivy completely recovering these houses with a green blanket.

Only a handful of people are left living in Houtouwan. Like this 51 years old man, who still enjoys the view in the morning and cultivates the unused fecund land around the abandoned two-stories houses in the afternoon.
Houtouwan was an important village on the fishing island of Shengshan, counting almost 3000 residents in the 80s. In the 90s people started to gradually move away because of the inconvenient transportation and limiting living area. By the 2000s the village was almost completely abandoned.
